Edge Computing: Data Collection and HMI Software for the Network’s Edge
Extend Your Network, Not Your Budget
Capturing and visualizing critical data at the remote edge of the network can be difficult and expensive. Ignition Edge by Inductive Automation is a line of lightweight, limited, low-cost Ignition software solutions designed specifically for embedding into field and OEM devices at the edge of the network. With Ignition Edge, edge computing is easier and more affordable than ever, so you can extend your data collection, visualization, and system management all the way to the edge of your network.
“Having the power of Ignition extend down to edge devices in the field offers a disruptive approach to how industrial network infrastructures are designed, deployed, and managed.”
– Arlen Nipper
Co-Inventor of MQTT
Install on Virtually Any Device
All the Ignition Edge solutions share some powerful features that make them ideal for edge computing. The Ignition Edge solutions work on Linux, any version of Windows, on macOS, and more, so you can install them on virtually any industrial device, even on a Raspberry Pi. With support for ARM processors, Ignition Edge can also run on the latest generation of edge-of-network devices.
Access Data from PLCs &
OPC UA Servers
For easy PLC connections, all Ignition Edge solutions come with up to 500 tags and are equipped with OPC UA, along with drivers for Modbus, TCP, and Siemens, and the Allen-Bradley suite of drivers. Other drivers supported by Ignition, such as DNP3 and Modbus RTU, can be added onto Ignition Edge solutions for an additional cost.
Poll Data at the Source
Ignition Edge makes edge computing easy. Install Edge right onto, or next to, devices on the plant floor or in the field so you can process data as close to the source as possible. This allows you to make device data the one source of truth, improving data reliability and reducing latency.
Works Seamlessly with Ignition
Ignition Edge is designed to be installed on devices at the edge of the network. The Ignition platform is designed to work on central servers and to be deployed to multiple clients. Using Ignition and Ignition Edge together, you can build scalable and affordable enterprise-wide systems.
Ignition Edge Solutions: Mix and Match
Edge has standalone edge computing solutions for remote HMIs and MQTT data transmission as well as solutions to easily extend large-scale enterprise architectures. With three powerful Edge solutions to choose from, you can use any one of them on a single device, or mix and match them to create powerful solutions tailored to your needs.

What is Ignition Edge and how do I buy it?
Ignition Edge is a line of software products designed specifically for edge computing. Ignition Edge products consist of the Ignition Edge platform and powerful software plugins that add functionality to the platform. There are three Ignition Edge products – Edge MQTT, Edge Panel, and Edge Enterprise – each of which performs a different function. The Ignition Edge products can be used as standalone solutions, or as part of a larger system. To find out which Edge product best suits your needs, please call us at: 1-800-266-7798
What is the difference between the Ignition Modules and the Ignition Edge Plugins?
Ignition is a unified industrial application platform which can be extended through the addition of fully integrated software modules. Each module adds new functions to the Ignition platform, which enables users to create applications for SCADA, MES, IIoT, alarming, reporting, and more. Ignition Edge is an edge computing platform with plugins for HMI, MQTT, and enterprise applications. Ignition modules cannot be installed on the Ignition Edge platform and Ignition Edge plugins cannot be installed on a standard Ignition gateway. Both Ignition and Ignition Edge can work seamlessly together as part of an integrated system. To find out more about the Ignition modules, visit the Modules page.
How does the Ignition Edge free trial work?
You can download the full version of Ignition and Ignition Edge on our Download page. Ignition and Ignition Edge are free to try and are easy to install. You can download both Ignition and Ignition Edge in the same download. The download file includes both the Ignition and Edge platforms as well as the Ignition Edge Panel and Enterprise plugins. To try Edge MQTT, you will need to download and install Edge and then download and install the Edge MQTT plugin separately. You can use the free trial as long as you want so you can build and test full solutions before you buy.
Is Ignition Edge compatible with other IIoT and SCADA packages?
Yes, Ignition Edge is based on open, non-proprietary, IT-standard technologies. Ignition Edge is fully interoperable and compatible with other major IIoT and SCADA packages along with other industrial and enterprise systems. Ignition Edge was designed to work great alongside other systems or on its own so it’s easy to fit into your existing solutions.
Is there training available to learn how to use Ignition?
Yes, we offer live Ignition training classes. To see when the next available class is, visit our Training page. We also have hundreds of on-demand training videos available for you to view whenever you want at: inductiveuniversity.com
What is the difference between Ignition Edge and Ignition?
Ignition and Ignition Edge are the same basic platform but Edge was designed and priced specifically for embedded devices at the edge of the network so it’s more limited than Ignition. Ignition comes with unlimited tags, clients, and database connections, while Ignition Edge comes with 500 tags, 2 clients (one local and one remote) and no database connectivity. Ignition Edge is also lower in cost than Ignition, ranging from $400-$1000 per installation.
How is Ignition Edge MQTT by Cirrus Link different than the other Edge products?
Cirrus Link Solutions is a Strategic Partner of Inductive Automation; their products are different from the other Ignition Edge products because they are not developed by Inductive Automation. Products developed by Strategic Partners are backed with a commitment to the long-term success of our customers. Inductive Automation sells the Cirrus Link products but the technical support for these products is provided by Cirrus Link Solutions.
What kind of devices can Ignition run on?
Ignition is cross-platform compatible so it can run on Windows 7, 8, and 10, and Windows Server 2008 and 2012, as well as Linux and macOS. Ignition can run on any device that runs Java, including PCs, laptops, servers, tablets, smartphones, remote field devices, and even Raspberry Pi’s.
Who uses Ignition?
Ignition software is used by thousands of integrators and industrial organizations in more than 100 countries. It’s used by some of the biggest companies in the world in industries like oil and gas, water/wastewater, manufacturing, automotive, food processing and more.
