A Stronger and Simpler Ignition Edge

Capturing, processing, and visualizing critical data at the remote edge of the network has never been easier or more affordable. By adding the updated line of Ignition Edge® products to field and OEM devices, you can extend your data collection with unlimited tag and device connections, see your data at the edge with state-of-the art visualization tools, run scripts, interface with applications, and extend your system all the way to the edge of your network with data syncing and system management.

The New Edge Product Line

The new Edge product line combines our five previous Edge products into two updated Edge products: Ignition Edge IIoT and Ignition Edge Panel. Don't worry, the power and functionality of our old products — Edge Compute, Edge Sync Services, and Edge EAM — aren’t going anywhere. Instead, their features are being rolled into the New Edge IIoT and Edge Panel.

In addition to these changes, Ignition Edge products no longer come pre-packaged with Oil & Gas specific drivers for ROC and Totalflow. However, these drivers can be purchased separately and added onto Edge products.

Ignition Edge IIoT

Ignition Edge IIoT turns virtually any field device, such as a touch panel or a client terminal, into a lightweight, MQTT-enabled edge gateway that works seamlessly with Ignition IIoT and other common IIoT platforms, providing remote data acquisition and optional secured feedback and control. It’s ideal for polling data at the device location and publishing data to an MQTT server that business systems and applications can access.

Now includes unlimited tags and device connections for included drivers, the ability to run scripts, create REST APIs, synchronize data to a central server, and act as an EAM Agent Gateway

Ignition Edge Panel

Ignition Edge Panel includes everything in Ignition Edge IIoT plus local visualization functionality for your HMIs. Choose between Perspective (2 sessions) or Vision (1 local client, 1 remote client) as your visualization system for Edge Panel. Build future-proof, robust local control systems that are Industry 4.0-compatible. It’s ideal for standalone HMIs and providing a local-client fallback for field HMIs if the network connection is lost.

Now includes unlimited tags and device connections for included drivers, the ability to publish MQTT data, run scripts, create REST APIs, synchronize data to a central server, and act as an EAM Agent Gateway

IGNITION EDGE FEATURES

Unlock Your Entire Architecture
with Ignition Edge

With Ignition Edge, stranded data is a thing of the past. Seamlessly connect all your edge devices, and publish and sync data to your central Ignition system. Install Edge products right onto devices on the plant floor or in the field so you can process data as close to the source as possible.

Cross-Platform

Works seamlessly with most computing platforms and can run on virtually any edge device.

Unlimited Tags & Devices

Run Scripts at the Edge

Includes unlimited tags and device connections for included drivers, and acts as an OPC UA server so it can connect with most PLCs.

Able to run scripts and create REST APIs for interfacing with third-party applications from the edge.

Transmit & Synchronize Data

Remote EAM Agent Gateway

Works Seamlessly with Ignition

Uses Edge to transmit data to any MQTT broker using the Sparkplug specification and acts as a limited remote server that synchronizes data from the edge to a central Ignition server.

Acts as a remote EAM Agent Gateway at the edge, working with a central Ignition server that has the Enterprise Administration Module (EAM).

Build scalable and affordable enterprise-wide systems by combining standard Ignition and Ignition Edge.

Included Ignition Native Drivers

In addition to the OPC UA Module, Ignition Edge includes a multitude of drivers for connecting with virtually any PLC and Device.

  • UDP and TCP Drivers
  • BACnet Driver
  • Serial
  • Allen-Bradley Driver Suite
  • Siemens Driver
  • Mitsubishi Driver
  • Modbus Driver
  • DNP3 Driver
  • Omron Driver
  • Opto 22 SNAP PAC Driver
  • IEC 61850 Driver

How is Edge Different from Standard Ignition?

The capabilities of Ignition Edge are more limited than those of the standard Ignition platform. Edge has no database connectivity and comes with 35 days of internal data storage for historical and event logging. Edge allows for only one tag provider, can run only one Ignition project at a time, and does not run standard Ignition modules.

A Piece of the Ignition Architecture

Ignition Edge is perfect for distributing I/O, providing local visibility of data, collecting data from remote sites over slow connections, and offering robust fiber networks with more scalability and access to data. It is designed to work in tandem with a central Ignition system, not to run an entire facility or site as a SCADA system. For that, check out standard Ignition.

Enhancing Edge Products

While standard Ignition Modules don’t work on Edge, there are additional modules and drivers for Edge, like the Totalflow and ROC drivers for Oil & Gas, OPC COM DA Module, and MQTT modules offered by our Strategic Partner, Cirrus Link Solutions. To get additional modules for Edge IIoT or Edge Panel, contact your IA account representative to discuss options.

Ready for Deployment with Select Partner Devices

Ignition Edge products can be purchased by themselves or as part of select Opto 22 devices. Ignition Edge also comes preinstalled on select devices sold by some Inductive Automation Alliance Partners. Ignition Edge Ready devices sold by Alliance Partners do not include Edge licenses but are verified to be fully compatible with Edge.

Ignition Edge FAQs

I’m currently using Ignition Edge products that are being phased out. Will my license automatically upgrade to the new Ignition Edge IIoT or Ignition Edge Panel?

If you have an existing Ignition Edge license with Upgrade Protection, there are some free and automatic upgrades available for your license, as well as some optional upgrades for purchase. Free upgrades are automatically applied to licenses that qualify. Reference the table on this page to see all the upgrade scenarios for Edge IIoT and Edge Panel.

Why is Ignition Edge changing?

As the functionality of Ignition Edge products expanded over time, the amount of options eventually became too complicated. To simplify the buying process for our customers, we decided to keep the two most popular products, Edge IIoT and Edge Panel, while including the functionality of the other three discontinued products into both Edge IIoT and Edge Panel.

What’s the difference between Ignition Edge IIoT and Ignition Edge Panel?

Both Edge IIoT and Edge Panel include unlimited tags and device connections, the ability to publish MQTT data, run scripts, create REST APIs, synchronize data to a central server, and act as an EAM Agent Gateway. Ignition Edge Panel also includes local visualization and control functionality, which is ideal for local HMIs or remote systems, using Perspective (2 sessions) or Vision (1 local client, 1 remote client). Ignition Edge IIoT does not include visualization capabilities.

Is Ignition Edge IIoT meant to be used as a standalone solution?

No. Ignition Edge IIoT is designed to work seamlessly with a central Ignition server for optimal performance, and to synchronize data to a centralized system and provide critical functionality.

Is Ignition Edge Panel meant to be used as a standalone solution?

Yes. Ignition Edge Panel is designed to work both as software for standalone HMIs and also work seamlessly with a central Ignition server. When connected to a central server, it can easily synchronize data to a centralized system and provide optional remote access and control.
