Job Description

The Development Group Manager I manages the developers in multiple Software Engineering teams, typically consisting of 8-15 reports. In this role, you'll find yourself as a mentor and a mediator, a planner and a problem-solver. It is a career which embraces the intersection of technology and leadership - one where technical knowledge, people management, and strategic oversight converge. The Development Group Manager’s primary purpose is supporting individual and team development and project success. This is a full-time position with remote, hybrid and on-site opportunities available.

The Development Group Manager I’s job skills, qualifications, and responsibilities, include but are not limited to:

Responsibilities

    Optimizing Engineering Operations
  • Own and oversee timelines, processes and implementation plans with significant input from the technical team, including: Milestone planning, meeting cadence, documentation updates, ticket authorship and/or management
  • Own, oversee and facilitate the efficiency of the team’s technical resources
  • Deep engagement with the team’s efforts, projects and workload, thereby having the ability to identify and escalate issues, contribute to resolving team questions or problems, or synthesize and relay feedback to the department manager
  • Clearly communicate strategy, clarify ticket ownership and facilitate cross-team or cross-departmental coordination
  • Ensure technical accountability and output of their teams by overseeing ticket work, completed implementation plans and other measures of technical success
  • Attend planning meetings to monitor and adjust team pace to instill urgency for success but protect from burnout
  • Advise teams with insights and recommendations to improve efficiency and/or effectiveness
  • Strategic Planning and Coordination
  • Align and coordinate with the department manager on cross-team/cross-departmental or companywide initiatives
  • Proactively identify and take initiative on cross-team and cross-departmental needs
  • Contribute to and aid in executing staffing decisions in service of company goals including identifying gaps, defining roles, and managing team size
  • Product Involvement
  • Gain and maintain sufficient product understanding relevant to your areas of supervision
  • Collaborate with Software Engineering Management and Product Management teams to define strategic direction and planning the product roadmap
  • Review and provide input on design documents as requested
  • Convey product direction and priority to an individual and team level
  • Relationships, Trust and Individual and Team Performance
  • Build strong relationships with direct reports through regular 1:1s and other interactions, prioritizing psychological safety and trust at the individual and team level
  • Foster mutual respect and ensure staff feel supported by both the company and the manager
  • Cultivate a culture of excellence with individual reports and the team as a whole
  • Create an environment of candid communication with staff and amongst the team; encourage the sharing of ideas and opinions
  • Create productive relationships with peers and superiors in order to achieve collective goals
  • Provide coaching, development and career management to employees including conducting career planning, performance evaluations, compensation reviews and promotions
  • Set performance expectations and proactively identify and manage low performers
  • Conduct terminations in coordination with HR and the department manager when necessary
  • Reduce the impact of interpersonal and technical conflicts within and outside the teams through efficient resolution and facilitation
  • Guide onboarding activities for new engineers, reducing startup time and ensuring future success within the division

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, related field or comparable experience
  • 8 years of industry experience
  • Managerial experience or a proven track record in technical leadership
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Written communication skills – able to document issues effectively and concisely
  • Strong programming skills – using Java, Javascript/Typescript, or Python
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies such as SCRUM
  • Familiarity with source control management systems such as Github
  • Ability to accurately and effectively document ideas and specifications
  • Ability to lead and guide teams of 4 or more employees

Pay

Based on the Sacramento region, the new hires target salary for this role is $150k - $187k.

Inductive Automation’s ranges are market-driven and set to allow for flexibility. Although it is not typical for an individual to start at the top end of the range for the position, compensation decisions are dependent on: the facts and circumstances of each case, work location, job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training; and other business and organizational needs.
